Program Description

Springfield Technical Community College’s Workforce Development Center is offering a 80-hour training for individuals currently licensed in various medical fields in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to prepare and take the exam to become a Certified EKG Technician. 

This non-credit course is aimed to prepare an individual to perform EKG’s, prepare patients for stress testing, and proper application of Holter monitors. This is a national certification, and can be used anywhere in the United States. The CET certification can lead to additional employment opportunities in the healthcare field, and provide a foundation for any future training.

EKG Technician Responsibilities

Major duties and responsibilities of the EKG Technician include:

  • Correct identification of the patient before performing tests
  • Educate patients prior to collecting diagnostic data to determine heart function
  • Prepare and perform EKGs
  • Effective interaction with patients and other personnel in the workplace
  • Performance of computer operations and record-keeping related to EKG’s
  • Adherence to all OSHA safety regulations

Prerequisites/Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age within three weeks of the class start date.
  • High School Diploma or completed HiSet (Formally known as G.E.D.)
  • English grammar, writing, and speaking skills equivalent to at least the 8th-grade level.
