The Successful Start Program offers students a bundled experience at STCC with a number of wrap-around supports to increase student success. One such course, Contextualized Writing Support will provide contextualized support for basic English skills in grammar, sentence structure, paragraphing, and essay development to prepare students for college-level writing. This course utilizes group work, team-building exercises, and hands-on projects. The second bundled course, First Year Experience, will help participants develop confidence in interacting with the college, faculty, and other students on campus. These two courses will provide support for the third course in the bundle which is a college-level social science course; the student will choose either General Psychology or Introduction to Sociology. Both of the courses are required for many of the programs across our campus. Additionally, students will have access to all STCC Student Support Services which include, advising, counseling, and tutoring as needed. All coursework, mentorship, and supports are all offered free of charge to accepted students
Coursework will be supported by:
- Sessions on academic skill-building, career/major exploration, self-advocacy, team building activities, and peer tutoring/mentoring
- Peer tutors/mentors will be assigned to each cohort. Open Educational Resources (OER), text books are free of charge
- All participants will receive access to the STCC library's digital equity program, which loans Chromebooks and hot spots.
- Participants will also be provided with a mandatory Blackboard training session to help them learn how to navigate STCC’s learning management system (LMS)
- Whether participants remain STCC students, or choose another college upon completion of this program, all skills provided will support students as they navigate their higher education aspirations.
- Connections to programs and resources for continued support, including but not limited to, TRIO Student Support Services and/or the Male Initiative for Leadership and Education (MILE).
