The Male Initiative for Leadership and Education (MILE) Summer Bridge Program offers recent high school graduates the opportunity to begin college early in an accelerated environment while providing additional supports and resources.
Resources include access to peer mentors, supportive faculty, supplemental instructors, academic tutors, and the MILE professional staff. Participants will become familiar with the STCC campus, get introduced to support services, and attend courses that strongly emphasize critical thinking and analytical skills.
Participants work as a cohort (a group of students taking classes together) during the STCC Summer 2 Session and are expected to attend classes on campus from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday from July 11 through August 11, 2022. Participants can earn up to six college credits.
Academic Coursework
General Psychology is an introductory course that identifies those scientific methods used to study human behavior.
Introduction to Sociology is an introductory course designed to acquaint the student with a working knowledge of the concepts used by sociologists and with the well-established generalizations in the field. Topics to be discussed include socialization, culture, population, group processes, social stratification ethnic/racial stratification, gender stratification, and social change.
Critical Skills for Success: Reading, Writing, And Study Skills (COL-150) is a that course develops skills critical for college study while helping students find a path through college that connects their academic studies with their interests, experiences, and aspirations. Students will learn to use educational resources at STCC; organize their academic work; navigate common challenges of college study; and develop reading, writing, and creative thinking skills. Instruction for the course will emphasize high-impact, competency-driven, and culturally responsive educational practices.

- Open Educational Resources (OER) textbooks, which are free of charge.
- Access to the STCC library’s digital equity program, which loans Chromebooks and hot spots.
- Blackboard training to help participants learn how to navigate STCC’s learning management system (LMS)
- Opportunities for leadership development and campus engagement.
- Connections to the MILE program and resources for continued support.
Whether participants remain STCC students or choose another college upon completing this program, all skills provided will support students as they navigate the higher education experience. At the conclusion of the Summer Bridge Program, participants have the opportunity to become participants in the MILE program, which will ensure that they are able to receive continuous program services throughout their educational career at STCC.
