TD Charitable Foundation supports STCC students with Internet Access gift
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, recently donated $10,000 to pay for Wi-Fi hotspots given to students studying online this semester at Springfield Technical Community College.
The donation was sent to the STCC Foundation, which helps STCC meet its goals and commitments to provide superior educational opportunities in the community.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has led many to pivot to a remote learning environment and as a result, equal access to education is now dependent upon digital access,” said Steve Webb, Regional President, Southern New England, TD Bank. "TD Bank is proud to help STCC students continue their studies by providing much-needed home Wi-Fi access.”
The contribution was made as part of the TD Community Resilience Initiative, a comprehensive program of the TD Ready Commitment, the bank's corporate citizenship platform. The TD Community Resilience Initiative includes funding, employee engagement and on-going collaboration with organizations and community groups across TD’s operating footprint that are critical now and into the future.
Denise Hurst, Vice President of Advancement & External Affairs, said STCC is thrilled and grateful for the financial support. Many students are struggling during the pandemic and cannot afford internet access to study from home, she said.
“The digital divide is a true reality for many of our students. They are facing a myriad of financial struggles during the pandemic and the cost of a computer and internet access to be able to work on their academics at home is not affordable,” Hurst said. “We express our sincere appreciation to TD Charitable Foundation for the gift, which will help our students achieve success.”
Students can borrow mobile hotspots, which are small boxes with a cell phone data plan, and take them anywhere to access the internet for studying. The units create hotspots, which are areas where a user can access the internet using Wi-Fi. They are available at the STCC Library.
TD Bank through its charitable giving arm, the TD Charitable Foundation, carries a legacy of supporting not-for-profit institutions and their important work throughout our region. Since its inception in 2002, the foundation has contributed over $251 million in grant funding to not-for-profit organizations.
