STCC’s Carberry Fine Arts Gallery to feature work by Florence artist Sean Greene
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Florence artist Sean Greene is exhibiting his abstract paintings and a sculpture at the Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery at Springfield Technical Community College through April 7.
The public is invited to attend a meet-and-greet reception at the gallery on Thursday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and on Saturday, March 24, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Greene will be at the gallery on both dates to answer questions and engage in discussions about his work.
The works in the exhibition reflect an interest in color and the visual forces at play in the use of shape and pattern. The forms in the paintings and sculptural works take on personalities and energies that become metaphors for human identifiers and interactions, as well as juxtapositions of a multitude of possible sources including the built environment, clothing patterns, graffiti, decoration and signage.
Through these interests, Greene explores a visual world that reflects our own, with all of its discords and harmonies. His move to explore sculpture for the first time in this exhibit shows an effort to include the viewers in these abstract relationships. With painting, the viewers remain outside looking in, but with sculpture, a physical relationship is evident with our own presence in the space.
Born in San Francisco in 1972 and raised in Connecticut and Vermont, Greene moved to Massachusetts in 1998. He earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2004, where he was awarded a three-year teaching associateship.
He lives and works in Florence with middle grade and children’s writer Molly B. Burnham, and their two children, Adelaide and Georgia.
Greene has been exhibiting frequently in the United States in galleries such as the Brian Morris Gallery in New York, and William Baczek Fine Arts and Geoffrey Young Gallery in Massachusetts, the Artisphere in Arlington, Va., and New Image Art in West Hollywood, among others. He received grants from the Somerville and Northampton Arts Councils, the Artists Resource Trust, and in 2014 was awarded a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship.
His work is in private collections in the United States, the U.K., Australia and France, as well as the corporate collections of Neiman Marcus, Sloan Kettering and the University Museum of Contemporary Art in Amherst.
Located in Building 28, first floor, on the Pearl Street side of STCC, the gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The gallery will be closed March 12-16 due to the college’s spring break.
