STCC’s ‘Carberry Conversations’ announces first in series of spring semester interviews with artists, photographers
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – “Carberry Conversations,” presented by Springfield Technical Community College’s Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery, continues Jan. 28, 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m., with a virtual conversation between associate professor and gallery coordinator Sondra Peron and visual artist Eric Pelka.
Born in 1973 in Cleveland, Ohio, Pelka moved to New York City as a young adult, where he spent 25 years creating artwork. In 2016, he moved to Massachusetts, where he now lives and works to continue painting. His artistic process involves layering diverse materials – including acrylic and oil paints, ink, pastel, marker and pencil – onto canvas, paper, wood, glass and collage.
In the fall of 2019, “Eric Pelka: 90s NYC to Rural Western Massachusetts,” featured dozens of paintings and drawings in an elaborate installation at the Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery in Building 28. Pelka’s work has been exhibited in Italy, Japan and across the United States, and featured in private collections around the globe. Visit ericpelka.com.

On Feb. 7 at 11 a.m., Carberry Conversations will feature a talk with artist Kiayani Douglas, which is part of Black History Month events at STCC. Douglas is a visual artist and educator. To register, visit stcc.io/douglas.
Carberry Conversations is a series of virtual talks throughout the academic year between Peron and several past exhibiting artists whose work has been on view at the Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery since 2013. Conceived in response to the ongoing pandemic, these virtual conversations function as a space to connect working artists and photographers to STCC and the Greater Springfield community covering a wide variety of topics including, origin stories, impact of current events on artistic process, and the function of art and photography during times of crisis. All Carberry Conversations are free and open to the public via Zoom. For more information about upcoming gallery events: stcc.io/carberry
The exhibition and associated events are supported in part by the School of Liberal and Professional Studies (LAPS) and the Fine Arts (A.A.) program.
