STCC wrestling teams capture titles at regional championship
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Competing at home, the men’s and women’s wrestling teams at Springfield Technical Community College both captured first place at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Northeast Conference Championship on Feb. 29.
The teams have won the title four years in a row.
“We’re proud of our men and women wrestlers, who continue to be very successful in the NCWA Northeast Conference,” said Jenkin Gould, director of athletics and fitness at STCC. “Our student-athletes worked hard to capture the title. I want to thank our dedicated staff, women’s coach Tim Crudden, men’s coach Alberto Nieves and assistant coach Josh Fontanez. ”
Crudden, of West Hartford, Conn., won the Women’s Wrestling Coach of the Year Award.
Men winning championships were Chris Vega of Holyoke, David Ortiz of Naples, Fla., Marcos Mercado of Northampton and Ricardo Magny, of Hyde Park.
Women winning championship were Katlin Wells of Penn Yan, N.Y., Olivia Meehan of Oakdale, Conn., Adaline Coates-Cooney of Williamsburg and Alessande Anderson of Springfield.
The teams faced off against wrestlers from 18 colleges and universities from throughout the Northeast, including the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
The teams will next compete in the NCWA Nationals in Allen, Texas, March 12-14.
