STCC Theater Workshop presents ‘Circle Mirror Transformation’ in December
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The College Theater Workshop at Springfield Technical Community College will bring to the stage “Circle Mirror Transformation,” a play centered around drama classes in a community center located in a fictional town in Vermont.
The play traces the lives of a handful of small-town Vermont residents who gather each week for an acting class. After they begin to experiment with harmless games, hearts are quietly torn apart and time wars of epic proportions are waged and won.
Phil O'Donoghue, a professor of English and theater at STCC, will direct “Circle Mirror Transformation,” which was written by Annie Baker, who was raised in Amherst. A New York Times reviewer called the play “absorbing, unblinking and sharply funny.”
“Annie Baker's play is an absolute feast,” according to the Times. “’Circle Mirror Transformation’ is the kind of unheralded gem that sends people into the streets babbling and bright-eyed with the desire to spread the word.”
Performances will be held in Scibelli Hall Theater (Building 2) on the following dates:
- Thursday, Dec. 5, 11 a.m.
- Friday, Dec. 6, 7 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 7, 7 p.m.
Saturday’s performance will benefit the STCC Foundation, a nonprofit organization which helps the college meet its goals and commitment to provide superior educational opportunities in the community.
"We are hoping for a great turnout for the benefit,” O’Donoghue said. “The STCC Foundation does wonderful work supporting our students. I am so pleased the STCC Theater Workshop is doing its part to support such a great cause."
Tickets, which are available at the door, cost $8 for the general public and $5 for STCC students, faculty, staff and seniors.
The play is presented by the STCC School of Liberal and Professional Studies and the College Theater Workshop.
