STCC Student Activities launches donation drive for Springfield Rescue Mission
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – When students involved in leadership roles at Springfield Technical Community College considered their next donation collection effort, they decided to focus on the Springfield Rescue Mission.
“We know a lot of people are going through hard times in the Springfield area, and the winter time is particularly difficult,” said Rebecca Lasky, president of the Student Government Association at STCC. “We are asking students and employees, as well as anyone in the Springfield community, to help out if they can.”
Lasky and other students involved with the Office of Student Activities are collecting new hats, gloves, mittens, socks and lounge pants through Feb. 23. Because most of their guests are men, the rescue mission is looking for mostly adult male items.
Kevin Ramsdell, Executive Director and CEO of the Springfield Rescue Mission, expressed gratitude to STCC’s students for supporting his organization.
“The Springfield Rescue Mission is blessed to have Student Activities help provide necessary items to help our less fortunate men, women and children in the Greater Springfield area,” Ramsdell said. “We could not do what we do without the extra help from students like you. Together we are making a great impact for our neighbors in need.”
Each semester, the Office of Student Activities gets behind a donation drive. In the fall, students collected items for Afghan refugees arriving in Western Massachusetts.
Student leaders involved in the Student Government Association organized the effort and will bring the donated items to the charity. They also will donate popcorn sales toward the cause.
The students noted that Random Act of Kindness Day falls on Feb. 17, so this is a fitting time to organize a donation drive.
The Student Government Association is asking for anyone to drop off donations in the Office of Student Activities, Student Learning Commons (Building 19), First Floor. The office is open Monday
Andrea Tarpey, coordinator of Student Activities at STCC, commended the students for taking action to help those who are less fortunate.
“They’re making a difference in the community,” she said. “That’s part of the mission of STCC.”
