STCC offers EMT classes starting Jan. 22
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Interested in becoming an emergency medical technician? Springfield Technical Community College will offer EMT classes beginning Jan. 22.
Students can choose to take day or evening courses to complete the program, which runs between January and May. Training takes place three days a week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Day classes are held between 8 a.m. and noon. Night classes run 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The program consists of in-class lectures and online training, a field trip and workshops to prepare for the state certification.
Based on the Department of Transportation curriculum for Basic Emergency Medical Technician, the program is approved by the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services.
The course covers basic life support skills and techniques, patient assessment and transporting patients.
The demand for EMTs in the job market remains strong. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the projected growth rate for EMTs is 7 percent, which is faster than average.
“This course is a great entrance into any healthcare or fire-related career,” said Jesse Briggs, EMT program director at STCC.
Students can also take the class to earn college credit.
