STCC hosts Fire Science Technology alumni-student reunion event
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield Technical Community College celebrated its annual Fire Science Technology alumni-student reunion on Oct. 29. The event in Scibelli Hall (Building 2) was a unique opportunity for current and former students, faculty and distinguished fire service leaders to connect, share experiences and support the next generation of fire science professionals.
Sponsored by Dean Christopher Scott of the School of Health and Patient Simulation, the event was well-attended by
56 alumni, current students and even a few prospective students, all enthusiastic about careers in fire science. STCC community members, including Fire Science coordinator Julian “Skip” Tenczar, Adjunct Professor Larry Brandoli, Assistant Dean Kelli Goodkowsky, clerk Raquel Figueroa and events coordinator John Reynolds, played key roles in organizing and supporting the reunion.
"STCC’s Fire Science Technology Program is essential in preparing the next generation of fire service professionals,” Scott said. “Our program equips students with the skills, knowledge and hands-on experience they need to serve their communities safely and effectively. Events like the alumni-student reunion are invaluable, as they allow our students to connect with industry leaders and mentors who inspire and guide them toward success in this critical field.”

Several distinguished guests provided insights on current challenges and leadership in fire service. Massachusetts State Fire Marshal Jon Davine ‘03, and West Springfield Fire Chief Christopher Bartone discussed the essential work of the Joint Hazard Incident Response Team, sharing experiences related to homemade explosive labs and illegal drug labs. Springfield Fire Commissioner and STCC alumnus Bernard J. Calvi ‘01 also addressed attendees with an inspiring presentation on leadership in the fire service.
Assistant Fire Chief Mike Dickson of West Springfield, alongside Ben Turnberg and Kirsten Therrien of the Chicopee Fire Department, offered guidance and expertise, creating a supportive environment for students to connect with industry mentors. The reunion fostered meaningful networking among alumni who are now leaders in their field, providing students with the chance to learn directly from accomplished professionals.
Attendees enjoyed pizza, refreshments and a collaborative atmosphere that reflected the tight-knit STCC fire science community.
“This gathering is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain insights from those working on the front lines and to begin building a professional network that will support their future success,” said Peter Buonome, STCC Fire Science adjunct faculty member.
The STCC Fire Science Technology Program, known for its hands-on learning approach and strong industry connections, continues to prepare students for meaningful careers in fire service and public safety. The annual reunion is one of the many ways the college supports its students’ journey into fire service, connecting them with mentors who serve as both inspiration and guidance.
