STCC Foundation accepts $100,000 donation for construction-related studies, scholarships
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Construction Industry Association of Western Massachusetts, Inc., has donated $100,000 to the Springfield Technical Community College Foundation for construction-related studies and scholarships.
The donation includes $25,000, which must be used for construction-related studies at STCC, and $75,000, which will go toward scholarships for students with interest in construction-related studies.
“Our group is thrilled to be able to help STCC continue to deliver highly trained individuals to construction-related positions throughout Western Massachusetts and beyond,” said David Fontaine, president of the Springfield construction company Fontaine Bros., Inc. and a member of Construction Industry Association of Western Massachusetts, Inc.

The Construction Industry Association of Western Massachusetts, Inc., a trade group, is making the donation as it ends operations. The group now is associated with Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts, Inc.
STCC President John B. Cook said the donation will help fulfill STCC’s mission to support students as they transform their lives.
“As a technical community college, education in the trades has always been part of our mission. We are very grateful for this gift, and in partnership with the STCC Foundation, we will continue to support the needs of our students, and invest in our unique array of programs,” Cook said.
Construction-related studies include programs such as Architecture and Building Technology and Civil Engineering Technology. Students who are enrolled in other programs but have an interest in a career in construction would also be eligible.
“This generous gift will help our students and our programs stay on the cutting edge of technology,” said Warren Hall, the department chair for Architecture and Building Technology and Civil Engineering Technology.
“There’s a saying in the industry, ‘If you are comfortable working with your existing technology then it’s probably already outdated.’ That couldn’t be more true in the fields of Architecture, Building, and Civil Engineering Technology,” Hall said. “We are very fortunate to have industry leaders in the greater Springfield area that have supported and continue to generously support our students and our construction related programs. It is ‘paying forward’ at its very finest."
For the first time ever, STCC will offer a Building Construction Management Certificate of Completion, a one-year program taught by industry professionals.
The program, which will start Jan. 23, is designed to teach students the fundamentals of the building construction management industry and prepare them for advancement in their professional careers. Building construction professionals have asked for this type of program.
Day and evening classes are available. Students who successfully complete the program will earn 25 credits and a certificate of completion.
The Architecture and Building Technology Department offers the program. All credits earned can be applied toward an associate degree in Building and Construction Management.
