STCC elects new student government leaders
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield Technical Community College’s student body elected Student Government Association leaders who will serve during the 2020-2021 academic year.
The new leaders are Student Trustee Alessande Anderson of Springfield; SGA President Jose Cuellar of Chicopee; and SGA Vice President Kimberly Quinonez of the Indian Orchard section of Springfield. They were elected after an online vote in early May.
The students will serve in leadership roles with the Student Government Association at STCC, which represents diverse student viewpoints and concerns.
STCC Vice President of Student Affairs Darcey Kemp said the students will gain valuable experience while improving campus life. SGA has a variety of committees and welcomes student involvement.
“They will be a voice for their fellow students at STCC,” Kemp said. “Becoming an SGA leader is a great way to get involved and make a difference during your time at STCC. They will develop leadership skills that can help them grow in their careers after graduation.”
“Congratulations to our new student leaders,” added Andrea Tarpey, coordinator of student activities at STCC. “I look forward to working with them over the next year.”
As trustee, Alessande Anderson will serve as a voting member of the Board of Trustees and will weigh in on long-range planning and fiscal oversight at STCC. Alessande, who is studying business and computer science at STCC, has been active in a variety of roles at the college. She served as Campus Activities Board chair, vice president of the STCC Veteran’s Club, Business Club secretary and was a member of the women’s wrestling team.
Incoming SGA President Jose Cuellar says he wants to speak for those who feel they don’t have a voice at STCC. A business major, Jose served as secretary of the G.L.B.T.A. (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender alliance) Club. He is an anime fan and writer.
Kimberly Quinonez, the new SGA vice president, is seeking a degree in social work from STCC. She said her goal is to “serve in the spirit of excellence and to advocate for every need that needs to be met.”
