Spring STCC student fine arts exhibition on view through May 4
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery at Springfield Technical Community College presents the Spring 2024 Student Fine Arts Exhibition on view through Saturday, May 4, 2024.
An end-of-semester celebration and reception for students will be held May 4, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Each semester STCC Fine Arts faculty select work to showcase their students' finest work. This spring visitors will see colorful paintings, charcoal drawings, 3D sculptures, and traditional gelatin silver photographs, among many other outstanding design projects, all artwork representing the culmination of student work.
“This show is not just a representation of ‘art majors,’” said Sondra Peron, professor of art and gallery coordinator. “On the contrary, regardless of major or career goals, any student enrolled in a fine arts course will display their artwork in the gallery. Most fine arts courses do not require any pre-requisite, and no art experience is required to register for a fine arts course at STCC.”
While STCC is proud of its technical mission, the college also demonstrates its commitment to the arts through courses offered through the School of Liberal and Professional Studies.
“As the commonwealth's only technical community college, we naturally elevate our technical mission. Yet we offer a variety of courses in the liberal and fine arts that foster creativity, ethical reasoning and civic engagement" said Dr. Christopher Thuot, Vice President of Academic Affairs at STCC. “In fact, the skills developed in our courses in the arts complement the technical skills STCC students pursue in programs across the college."
Visitors to the gallery not only have an opportunity to view student art – they can observe a Camera Obscura Room which is an example of blending art with science. First conceived and built in 2013 with analog photography students in the former gallery office, the room offers a unique viewing experience.
The laws of optics dictate that light travels in straight lines and when light reflects off objects outside a darkened room, some of those rays of light travel through a small hole or aperture in a window, and reform on the opposite wall, upside down. The Camera Obscura Room at STCC is open to the public when exhibitions are on view.
The gallery and camera obscura, located on the campus of STCC in Building 28, are open Mondays 10-2 pm, Tuesdays 11-4 pm, Wednesdays 10-5 pm, Thursdays, 11-3 pm, Fridays 10-3 pm (closed Saturdays except by arrangement, speron@stcc.edu).
Parking is available in K Lot. Use the Pearl Street gate for easy access. The gallery and all events are free to the public.
This exhibition and associated events are supported in part by the School of Liberal and Professional Studies and the Fine Arts program. Visit stcc.io/Carberry for more information.
