‘Roadmap to STCC’ initiative serves as a guide for Springfield Public Schools students
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield Technical Community College encourages students in Springfield Public Schools and their families to join monthly online information sessions that will serve as a “Roadmap to STCC.”
The initiative provides personalized onboarding events for students in the city’s public schools. An admissions counselor will help students, their families and their guidance counselors focus on eliminating barriers to increase student success at STCC.
“We’re thrilled to offer an online information session each month through the winter and spring for Springfield students,” said Darcey Kemp, vice president of student affairs at STCC. “We know that many students in Springfield have so much potential and will succeed in college, but they need guidance.”
Jennifer McNeill, an admissions counselor who will lead some of the online sessions, said students can face any number of barriers that stand in their way of going to college.
“They may be the first in their family to go to college, which can make it hard to know what to expect,” McNeill said. “They might not realize they may be able to receive financial aid to make their education affordable, and in many cases free, through a combination of Federal grants and STCC scholarships. The Roadmap to STCC will give them tools they need.”
The online sessions take place once a month at 1 p.m. on the following dates: Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 15, April 12 and May 10. Visit stcc.io/roadmap to register.
STCC will offer readiness tools and connect students with resources they can use to meet college expectations, which will prepare them for academic success, Davis-Freeman said.
Participants in the Roadmap to STCC can expect personalized presentations and demonstrations on topics such as admissions, financial aid, support services, academic services, parent info sessions, career exploration and more.
Yolanda D. Johnson, Executive Officer for Student Services at Springfield Public Schools, said the Roadmap to STCC provides a comprehensive approach in the mechanics of enrolling at the community college.
“More importantly, the Roadmap helps us be more informed as partners to understand the conditions that foster or hinder student postsecondary success,” Johnson said. “We want our students to not just enroll at STCC, we want them to experience college success that results in graduating with a college degree or certificate. This collaboration with STCC has increased engagement between the STCC Admissions Team, our high school counselors, and our parents.”
STCC – the most affordable college in Springfield – serves as a pathway to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to earn bachelor’s degrees and beyond. The only technical community college in Massachusetts, STCC also offers certificates and degrees that prepare students to start careers upon graduation. STCC offers a range of programs in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), healthcare, business, social services and more.
