Registration open for Building Estimating & Bidding class at STCC
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield Technical Community College is offering an online class that teaches students the foundational concepts of becoming a professional construction estimator.
Building Estimating & Bidding 101 is the first of a two-part class offered through the Workforce Development Center at STCC. After taking these courses, students will have the foundation to understand various aspects of building, estimating and bidding on construction projects. Students will work with residential working drawings and specifications from recently built projects in Western Massachusetts.
Students can take the courses from the comfort of their homes using the Blackboard online learning platform. The class is taught asynchronously, which allows students to learn on their own schedule within a certain timeframe (Oct. 4-Nov. 12).
“We’re excited to offer this convenient online class and give students an opportunity to get the training needed to be a part of the growing field of building construction,” said Elliot Levy, senior director for workforce development at STCC. “The course will give students an understanding of career opportunities in the construction and building industry.”
Instructor Jennifer DeForge, an associate professor in the Architectural and Building Technology Program at STCC, describes the course as an ideal pathway to success in the building and construction industry.
“This course will provide an opportunity to those in the building industry to create a more accurate estimate for their projects,” DeForge said. “With the ever changing cost of materials and energy efficiency techniques, this course is built to increase your profitability by providing accurate construction cost estimates.”
DeForge added, “Building industry companies are seeking qualified construction cost estimators throughout the state of Massachusetts. This course will provide the foundation needed to be successful in this exciting field of construction estimating.”
Highlights of the course include:
- Introduction to the estimating process and project manuals
- Contracts, specifications, bidding procedures
- Estimating organization and software introduction
- Estimating cost of labor, materials, and site investigation
- Profit, overhead, and general conditions
- Finalize estimate and specifications and blueprint reading skills
The course includes six individual online, asynchronous topics. The class is accessible anytime, anywhere on desktops, laptops, tablets and phones.
Students will receive a certificate of completion after finishing the course. Students who successfully complete both Building Estimating & Bidding 101 and Building Estimating & Bidding 201 may receive three credits upon enrollment in the STCC Building Construction Management Certificate Program or the STCC Project Management Associate Degree Program.
The course content was developed by an industry expert who works as an experienced estimator and licensed construction supervisor, with a strong knowledge in the residential sector of design, building and consulting.
Faculty from the STCC Architecture & Building Technology (ABT) program will assist through the 6 weeks of the course.
