Put me in, coach! STCC DAY at Westfield Starfires baseball game set for June 21
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Come out to the ballgame with Springfield Technical Community College on June 21.
Faculty, staff and students from STCC will attend the game between the Starfires and the Pittsfield Suns at Bullens Field in Westfield. STCC President John B. Cook will throw out the first ceremonial pitch with hundreds of students from area vocational-technical high schools in attendance. These students received free tickets to the game, courtesy of the Starfires and STCC.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m.at Bullens Field, Smith Avenue, Westfield. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
“STCC has strong ties to the city of Westfield, so we thought it was a great idea for us to come out on a beautiful summer night to support the Starfires and have some fun,” Cook said.
Cook noted that STCC and Westfield State University have formed partnerships in nursing and biotechnology programs. The institutions created pathways for STCC students to transfer credits and pursue a bachelor’s degree from Westfield State.
“The transfer agreements we have in place give residents throughout the region, including those living in Westfield, the affordable option to start at STCC and finish at Westfield State University,” Cook said. “We also offer powerful credit-earning opportunities for Westfield Technical Academy students taking classes related to STCC programs in computer systems engineering and optics and photonics. STCC has become a very smart choice for people living in Westfield.”
At the start of the just-completed school year, 45 graduates from Westfield Tech and 109 from Westfield High School enrolled at STCC. Of all STCC students who graduated in May 2018, one in five transferred to Westfield State.
Attendees on June 21 will have a chance to cheer for the Starfires with STCC’s mascot Rowdy The Ram. Anyone interested in finding out more about STCC’s 90 degree and certificate programs, including the transfer programs with Westfield State University, can talk to an Admissions counselor who will be at the game to answer questions. STCC has programs in business, engineering, health, liberal arts, science and technology, including many not available anywhere else in the region.
Chris Thompson, co-founder and co-owner of the Westfield Starfires, said, “We’re excited to bring the Futures Collegiate Baseball League to Western Mass and equally excited to partner with STCC to bring the region’s hard-working voc-tech students out for a fun night of baseball.”
The Starfires, a new team in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, played their first-ever game on May 31. The team name pays homage to the Barnes Air National Guard base in Westfield. Team members Vincenzo Camera (P) and Sean Moorhouse (1B) play baseball at Westfield State.
