Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito to address virtual STCC STEM Careers event
SRINGFIELD, Mass – Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito will offer the keynote address at the Springfield Technical Community College’s STEM Starter Academy’s STEM Careers Symposium on Wednesday morning.
The virtual live event will be held via Zoom videoconferencing. Students from STCC and local high schools are expected to attend. Register at stcc.edu/stem-week to join the event.
In addition to the address by Polito, the symposium will include talks by distinguished presenters from Harvard, UMass Amherst, and the UMass Medical School about their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) career choices, challenges and opportunities. They will share advice with STCC students in attendance.
Each panel member will also lead a group discussion on choosing and persevering in a STEM major.

“Virtual STEM Careers Symposium, a virtual event that is part of STEM Week 2020 at STCC. STEM Week 2020 is organized by the Executive Office of Education and the STEM Advisory Council in partnership with the state’s 9 Regional STEM Networks. It is a statewide effort to boost the interest, awareness and ability for all learners to envision themselves in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and employment opportunities.

About the STCC STEM Starter Academy
The STEM Starter Academy provides incoming first year students a jumpstart to their first semester on campus. Participants receive a funded academic experience, launching them into their first year by taking classes, receiving tutoring and coaching, going on field trips, seeing guest speakers, and having hands-on experiences. During the academic year, students will also have access to coaching and tutoring support, and participate in STEM Starter Academy events and activities. Students who are interested in participating must apply. Students of color and female students are strongly encouraged to apply.
