College for Kids 2024 at STCC offers fun, educational experiences
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Do you have children who are ready to learn while having fun? Consider registering them for College for Kids at Springfield Technical Community College, a summer program that exposes participants between 11 and 16 to learning opportunities available in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) fields.
With the first session launching June 18, College for Kids will give tweens and teens the chance to have fun learning about CPR and first aid, public speaking, creating mobile apps, basketball and physics, acting, airbrushing and more.
“We believe in nurturing young minds and fostering a love for learning that goes beyond traditional classroom settings,” said Assistant Vice President of Workforce Development Gladys Franco. “Our program offers a unique blend of educational enrichment, hands-on activities and creative exploration, all designed to ignite curiosity and inspire future academic pursuits.”
Here are the College for Kids at STCC programs on tap June 18-Aug. 2. Sessions run 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., except for Airbrushing, Math Matters and Create Mobile Apps, which runs 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Some programs are free, while others have a fee. - CPR and First Aid, June 18-20, June 25-27: Designed specifically for mature young people interested in caring for others (i.e., babysitting, camp counseling, or lifeguarding) to learn essential CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid skills for infants, children and adults.
- It’s Your Turn, Take the Mic, July 8-12: A workshop in public speaking that seeks to empower girls to have more confidence and self-esteem and develop the poise and communication skills needed to engage in effective public speaking.
- Future STEAMers, July 8-12: The Future STEAMers will provide immersive experiential learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
- Origami, July 15-19, July 12-26: Origami students will learn the traditional Japanese art technique of assembling paper into a variety of decorative or representational forms and polyhedral, (solid figures with 6 or more faces).
- Intro to Acting, July 15-19, July 22-26: What makes theater so powerful? It teaches us to discover how we feel while giving us the courage to express ourselves! Throughout this program, our main goals will be building self-awareness, cultivating self-confidence, and exploring our inner creativity.
- Airbrushing, July 15-19, July 22-26: Does your child love painting? Students will use vibrant colors and designs to learn how to operate an airbrushing machine to design projects.
- Math Matters, July 15-19, July 22-26: This camp explores various mathematical applications and projects from financial literacy to physics. Students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities while engaging with mathematical concepts. This program is offered in partnership with the STEM Starter Academy and HSI STEM.
- Create Mobile Apps, July 15-19, July 22-26: This session is an introduction to the exciting world of developing apps for mobile and tablet devices. Students will create applications for mobile computing devices that culminate with a student portfolio of Android Apps. This program is offered in partnership with the STEM Starter Academy and HSI STEM.
- Basic Design, July 29-Aug. 2: The Art Basic Design course is an introduction to the elements of two-dimensional design.
- Basketball and Physics, July 29-Aug. 2: The Springfield Ballers will help players of all abilities develop their athletic skills and enhance their skill set in all positions.
