Art gallery at STCC to feature large scale collage works by Amherst artist Keith Hollingworth
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Mixed media artist Keith Hollingworth’s two series, “54 African Americans” and “Homage to Art,” will be on view through Thursday, Nov. 9, at Springfield Technical Community College’s (STCC) Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery. A “meet and greet” reception for the artist is scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
For the past three years, Hollingworth of Amherst has been working on a large series of collages of African Americans. All the collage materials were made from images in The New York Times, with each piece measuring 14 by 17 inches.
The upper portion of each piece is a set of images from Times photographer Bill Cunningham’s Sunday fashion page, superimposed with a photo of an African American who has made some contribution to the history of African Americans. The lower portion contains the name of the individual, along with descriptive information. The 54 collages are hung one against the other in a giant grid, giving the sense of a continuum, much like a mural.
Hollingworth has said his intent is to show that African Americans are both part of, and apart from, American society, and that many barriers have been broken.
The second series on view at the Carberry Gallery, “Homage to Art,” includes more than 120 separate canvases devoted to individual artists, their style and a replica of their signature. The focus of the series is to recognize that many artists have served as great teachers.
Hollingworth, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1960s, is a professor of art at Westfield State University.
More of Hollingworth’s artwork can be viewed on his website: www.keithhollingworth.com.
