STCC to host ‘Fitting for Future’ event for teens in foster care

Springfield Technical Community College will host “Fitting for the Future, an all-day event on April 4 that provides teens in foster care with formal clothing and accessories for special events such as prom, graduation and job interviews. For the sixth year, the STCC Cosmetology Department will partner with event organizer HelpOurKids Inc., an Amherst-based nonprofit that supports children and teens living in foster care in Western Massachusetts.

STCC welcomes artist-in-residence during Black History Month

Springfield Technical Community College will feature artist-in-residence Kiayani Douglas throughout Black History Month, including a kickoff event on Saturday, Feb. 8. Her exhibit, “Fallacies of a Black Identity Enthusiast,” is on view through Feb. 29 at the Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery in Building 28.

STCC staff member to receive 100 Women of Color Award

Vonetta Lightfoot, multicultural affairs operation manager at Springfield Technical Community College, will be honored for her contributions to the community at the 100 Women of Color Gala & Awards on April 3. The event, which will be held at the Bushnell Theater in Hartford, recognizes women of color in business, education, entrepreneurship, entertainment, government, public service and their impact on the lives of people in Western Massachusetts and Connecticut communities.

College kicks off ‘Leap Forward with STCC!’ fundraising effort

In celebration of the leap year, the Springfield Technical Community College Foundation has launched a “leap forward” fundraising campaign to support students. The Foundation is asking alumni, parents, the community and friends of the college to make a gift of $29 in the month of February. The contribution will go directly to support the students currently enrolled at STCC.

STCC names coordinator of Academic Advising and Transfer Center

Springfield Technical Community College announces the appointment of Kiyota Garcia as coordinator of the Academic Advising and Transfer Center, effective Jan. 27. In 2010, Garcia started working in the Academic Advising and Transfer Center, which provides continuous support to strengthen, nurture, empower and educate students in making informed decisions that will guide their educational experience.

Springfield Technical Community College will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a series of events on campus. The events, which are open to the public, are free except for the Soul Food & Jazz Luncheon, which costs $5 for the general public and $2 for STCC students.

Love 101: STCC class explores matters of the heart

Eric Brown teaches the Psychology of Love at Springfield Technical Community College, an honors class that explores the mysterious and powerful emotion in detail. The course takes a scholarly yet humanistic approach to studying how love shapes elements of psychology, sociology and anthropology. While there are a handful of love-themed psychology classes at four-year colleges and universities in the United States, Brown said STCC may be the only community college that offers such a course.

STCC welcomes Springfield middle-schoolers for ‘physics of basketball’

About 75 students from three Springfield middle schools recently had a chance to apply a physics lesson to the game of basketball. In a partnership between Springfield Technical Community College and Springfield Public Schools, students from Alfred G. Zanetti Montessori Magnet School, Forest Park Middle School and Van Sickle Academy on Jan. 16 participated in an event dubbed “the physics of basketball.”

Internship gives STCC business student hands-on experience

While a student at STCC, Julia Baker of Southwick beefed up marketing efforts for several businesses that work with the MSBDC. She took photos, shot videos and offered social media advice. She was able to learn what makes small businesses tick – from startups to well-established companies.

STCC to offer legal interpreting certificate program

Interested in working as a legal interpreter? Springfield Technical Community College will offer training beginning Feb. 25. The course runs through April, with classes meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.
