STCC joins GivingTuesday to help students get textbooks

Springfield Technical Community College will participate in GivingTuesday on Dec. 1 with the theme “STCC to the Books,” an initiative to help defray the cost of textbooks for students. “For GivingTuesday this year, we are highlighting donations to fund our Mary Kileen-Bennett Book Scholarship fund, so donors can support us with gifts around the costs of textbooks,” said Kelly Galanis, director of Operations & Donor Relations at STCC.

In STCC 1960s class, unsettled history offers insight into today’s social movements

Social Change in the 1960s, a three-credit course in the history department, urges students to look closely at the iconic revolutions of that era: Vietnam War protests, the civil rights movement, the fight for women’s liberation and gay rights.

New STCC class this spring explores income tax preparation

Springfield Technical Community College this spring will offer a new class that teaches students to prepare federal income taxes. The training will help students develop a skill to prepare taxes for themselves, family and friends. In addition, they could become excellent candidates for tax preparation jobs, said Anthony Rondinelli, a professor of business administration who is teaching the three-credit class called BUS-151 Federal Income Tax Preparation.

STCC launches LGBTQIA+ employee resource group on Transgender Remembrance Day

On the day marking Transgender Day of Remembrance, Springfield Technical Community College announces a new LGBTQIA+ Employee Resource Group. The new group at STCC will join existing employee support networks, including the Hispanic Association of Higher Education (HAHE) and the Black Professionals Group (BPG).

Drinking water training courses create pathway to in-demand jobs

Springfield Technical Community College will continue to offer its series of online certificate training courses to prepare students for careers in the drinking water industry. This spring STCC will offer the “Basic Water Treatment” course which will run from Feb. 8 – April 16.

STCC receives donation of feminine products to assist students

Springfield Technical Community College’s Center for Access Services received a donation of Always brand feminine hygiene pads to help students who are struggling financially through the pandemic. Always offered to donate several pallets of women’s pads to the STCC food pantry, known as the Ram Cupboard. Stop & Shop, which has made previous food gift card donations worth $13,500, contacted STCC to ask if the college would be interested in the feminine products.

STCC’s affordable online ‘winter session’ starts Dec. 23

Springfield Technical Community College will offer a four-week online winter session in December, an affordable opportunity for college students whether they’re enrolled at STCC or another school. The session runs Wednesday, Dec. 23, through Tuesday, Jan. 19. Registration for current students opens Nov. 18. Registration for new students begins Nov. 23.

Wellness, fitness and women leadership highlighted at STCC events

Springfield Technical Community College will host a wellness and fitness retreat and an event featuring women leaders on Nov. 18 and 19 at 12:15 p.m. The free virtual online Zoom events are open to the community as well as STCC students, faculty and staff. Lidya Rivera-Early, director of Community Engagement at STCC, said the wellness and fitness retreat will be an opportunity to learn tips for improving mental and physical health.
