New course at STCC prepares students for before- and after-school care

Springfield Technical Community College this spring will offer a course that addresses a growing need: how to educate and care for children when school isn’t happening. Conor J. Bevan, the director of program development for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holyoke, will teach the new class, called Out of School Time.

Springfield Technical Community College unveiled new program options under general studies to prepare students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities and focus on liberal arts majors. The majors offered this spring are called English Communication and Professional Writing Transfer and Social Sciences Transfer.

STCC class prepares students for careers in the paving industry

Springfield Technical Community College will offer an asphalt pre-apprenticeship class that paves the way for careers working in asphalt laboratories. The 280-hour program, which runs Feb. 22 through April 23, consists of classroom work and paid, on-the-job training.

STCC sends Stop & Shop donation to Springfield Public Schools

Springfield Technical Community College has passed its donation of milk from Stop & Shop to Springfield Public Schools to help homeless, migrant and at-risk students. “During this time, we have seen so many families struggling, and being able to pass along a donation like this one brings not only smiles, but relief to their faces,” said Jose Lopez-Figueroa, director of the Center for Access Services at STCC.

Professor Denise "Daisy" Flaim is the recipient of the Faculty of the Year Award for 2019-2020. The award recognizes Flaim’s teaching techniques to accommodate a variety of learning styles, her efforts to build an inclusive classroom, her work with students outside of the classroom, support letters from colleagues, students and supervisors as well as her service contributions to STCC.

That was true for Carolyn Gardner-Thomas until she came to Springfield Technical Community College, where she graduated in 1998 with an associate degree in engineering.

STCC creates affordable transfer agreements with Post University

Springfield Technical Community College this fall partnered with Post University in Waterbury, Conn., to offer seamless transfer pathways in six programs. Students in the following STCC associate degree programs have an opportunity to transfer to Post University and pursue a bachelor’s degree: applied psychology, business transfer, communication and digital media, criminal justice transfer, early childhood education transfer, and human services/social work.
