STCC professors to work on intellectual property education initiative

Two Springfield Technical Community College professors have been selected to work on an intellectual property educational initiative over the next two years – an effort that could help Western Massachusetts business owners better understand how to protect their creative and original ideas. STCC is one of only five colleges nationwide with faculty accepted into the Michelson IP (Intellectual Property) Educator in Residence Initiative.

Phlebotomy for Healthcare Workers class at STCC starts Oct. 19

Registration is open for Springfield Technical Community College’s phlebotomy for healthcare workers class, which starts Monday, Oct. 19. Offered through the Workforce Development Center, the 60-hour training is for individuals licensed in various medical fields in Massachusetts. The class runs Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Oct. 19-Nov. 3.

STCC professor elected as Fellow Member of the Optical Society

Dr. Nicholas Massa, Springfield Technical Community College professor of optics and photonics, was elected as a 2021 Fellow Member of The Optical Society (OSA). Massa was one of 118 OSA members from 24 countries awarded the distinction. According to the Optical Society, the Fellow Members were recognized for their significant contributions to the advancement of optics and photonics through education, research, engineering, business leadership and service.

TD Charitable Foundation supports STCC students with Internet Access gift

The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, recently donated $10,000 to pay for Wi-Fi hotspots given to students studying online this semester at Springfield Technical Community College. The donation was sent to the STCC Foundation, which helps STCC meet its goals and commitments to provide superior educational opportunities in the community.

STCC this spring will remain online with mix of low-density labs

Springfield Technical Community College this spring semester will continue to offer online classes with a combination of on-campus low-density labs for its health and STEM programs. In an email to the campus community on Oct. 7, STCC President John B. Cook said operations in the spring semester will mirror the plan made for the fall in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cook and his administration consulted with faculty in making the decision.

Hampden Prep offers a unique free opportunity for adult community members to increase their digital skills with computers, online learning, keyboarding that is often needed for employment, college or training programs.

STCC medical assistant program ranked top for affordability, quality

Two websites have ranked Springfield Technical Community College‘s medical assistant program the top in Massachusetts for quality and value. Medicalassistantadvice.com listed STCC as having the best medical assistant program in Massachusetts. STCC was listed as No. 1, beating out other community college and training programs in the state. Another website, MedAssistantEDU.org, rated the program as the most affordable in the Commonwealth.

STCC student part of team that invents sensing eye mask

Emerson Alexander, who graduated from STCC in the spring 2020, was part of a team that invented a lightweight mask that can sense eye movement and sleep signals when worn in an everyday environment. She co-authored an article about the invention in a peer-reviewed journal, “Matter.”
