STCC professor shares memories from Vietnam at Veterans Day event

At a Veterans Day event at Springfield Technical Community College, professor Eric Brown shared grim memories of his service as a field medic in Vietnam and described how the wartime experience shapes his work at STCC. He reminded those gathered in the forum at the Student Learning Commons why many veterans struggle after coming home.

STCC disperses more than $4 million in federal grants to help students

Springfield Technical Community College distributed $4,018,000 from a federal emergency relief grant provided in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to help 3,405 eligible students. STCC in October distributed money made available through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) and the American Rescue Plan Act enacted by Congress.

STCC Optics and Photonics professor accepts award at conference

Nicholas Massa, a professor Optics and Photonics at Springfield Technical Community College, accepted an award recognizing him for outstanding contributions to education in optical science and engineering. Massa accepted the Esther Hoffman Beller Medal from Optica, formerly the Optical Society of America (OSA), an organization that advances optics and photonics worldwide. The society held a virtual Frontiers in Optics conference Nov. 1-4.

STCC Phlebotomy for Healthcare Workers class starts Nov. 1
Date: Thursday, October 21, 2021

Springfield Technical Community College will offer 60-hour training for healthcare workers who want to become a certified phlebotomist. The class, open to anyone licensed in various medical fields in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, runs Nov. 1 through Nov. 24. Class hours are 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Labs for the course will be held in person on the STCC campus. All students must wear masks and adhere to STCC COVID-19 procedures.

STCC programs recognized for quality, affordability by College Factual

Several of Springfield Technical Community College’s programs were recognized as top tier in a wide-ranging ranking list for 2022 by College Factual, a data analytics website. According to College Factual listed ranking highlights for STCC, including quality and affordability. In total, STCC was awarded 84 badges in the 2022 rankings. The highest ranked major is mechanical engineering technology.

Charles V. Ryan played a key role in the founding of STCC

Charles V. Ryan, who died Monday at the age of 94, was one of four key players in the founding of STCC in 1967. The founders realized the ideal use of the Armory facility would be as a college. Others included Garvey (also the first president of the college), Joseph J. Deliso Sr., an industrialist, and Anthony M. Scibelli, a state representative and chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
