‘100 Males to College’ holds annual retreat at STCC
Students from area high schools gather at STCC for "100 Males to College" retreat.
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Young men enrolled in 100 Males to College: Brotherhood for College Success gathered at Springfield Technical Community College for the group’s annual retreat.
The retreat on April 13 was a time to bring the newer 100 Males to College students together to bond, get a clear understanding of expectations and learn some strategies for success for their academic and personal lives, said James Lightfoot, an academic advisor at STCC.
"The 100 Males to College Initiative provides these young men the opportunity to connect and bond with other students within their school district with the same goals in mind: high school completion and advancement in the ideas of success and support,” Lightfoot said.
Students who gathered at the retreat attend Central High School, Commerce High School, Putnam Vocational, Springfield Conservatory of the Arts, Springfield Renaissance School, Springfield High, Duggan Expeditionary Learning School, and Worcester Public Schools.
Students focused on the following topics of the day:
- Mental Health: The Hidden Costs of Being A Man in Today's Society?
- Communication: Express Yourself! Strategic Skills in Communicating as a Man and Man of Color
- Self-reflective: Defining Your Brand
- Healthy Relationships: Know Your Role: Dating, Relationships, and Situational Awareness
The 100 Males to College Program was created by the state Department of Higher Education in 2015 to increase college access, enrollment, retention, and success for low-income males and males of color.
Sponsors included STCC, Springfield Public Schools, Westfield State University, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
